Description & Coverage
Description:

Agriculture is often under the threat of invasive species of animal pests and pathogens that do harm to crops. It is essential to have the best methods and tools available to prevent this harm. Biosecurity is a mixture of institutions, policies, and science applications that attempts to prevent the spread of unhealthy pests.

Tactical Sciences for Biosecurity in Animal and Plant Systems focuses on the tactical sciences needed to succeed in the biosecurity objectives of preventing plant and animal pathogens from entering or leaving the United States. This book explores a divergence of tactics between plant and animal exotic disease response. Covering topics such as animal pests and pathogens, tactical management, and early detection, this book is an essential resource for researchers, academicians, university faculty, government biosecurity practitioners, customs officers, clinical scientists, and students.

Coverage:

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Agricultural Biosecurity
  • Agricultural Systems
  • Animal Pathology
  • Animal Pests and Pathogens
  • Biosecurity
  • Early Detection
  • Invasive Species
  • Microbial Forensics
  • Pathogen Evolution
  • Plant Pathology
  • Risk Analysis
  • Tactical Management
Reviews & Statements

The underpinning of health strategy, whether at an international, national, local or enterprise-level, is an effective biosecurity system that prevents the entry and spread of pathogens and pests. Effective biosecurity systems safeguard the health of people, animal and plant production systems, and strive to preserve natural environments. This book focuses on the scientific principles, tactics and activities that support strategic actions and policy decisions in biosecurity. Biosecurity subject matter experts describe the motivations for and thought processes behind biosecurity measures exploring the interrelationships between science and technology, economics, public awareness, global trade and travel, and their impacts on pest and pathogen threats and production and ecosystem vulnerabilities.

Tactical Sciences for Biosecurity in Animal and Plant Systems is novel by virtue of highlighting the interoperability of the biosecurity tactics employed in animal and plant systems. Covering topics such as economics of biosecurity, pathogen evolution, risk analysis, pest and pathogen surveillance, diagnostic testing, emergency responses, longer-term response and recovery and microbial forensics for legal attribution, this book is an essential resource for educators, researchers, clinical scientists, emergency responders, government biosecurity practitioners, and students.
