Interoperability: Can’t We All Just Work Together?

By IGI Global on Feb 4, 2011
Interoperability is an increasingly important issue in a variety of industries, particularly as advancing technology presents new challenges and opportunities for businesses and industries. Interoperability was a recent topic of discussion during an interview with David Blumenthal, M.D., the chair of the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology, a section of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. During the interview Blumenthal noted that one major goal for the ONC in the coming year is a higher level of integration in the healthcare system.

As health information technology improves and moves forward, more hospitals and healthcare industry systems are implementing these technologies, and this is leading to an increased need for interoperation. According to Blumenthal, interoperability efforts will focus on "standards, initiatives, policies and procedures, governance of the Nationwide Health Information Network, new solutions for interoperability, better privacy and security policies—the whole suite of initiatives that are necessary to make interoperability work." Much work is still needed to achieve the goals of integration, but the ONC believes that the United States healthcare system will ultimately be more effective. Electronic Business Interoperability: Concepts, Opportunities and ChallengesInteroperability is being globally impacted by changing technologies, and healthcare is only one example. Many business industries are also looking for higher levels of integration, particularly due to the rise in electronic business. In order to accommodate the growing need for research in this area, IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher, is proud to announce the release of one of its newest titles, Electronic Business Interoperability: Concepts, Opportunities and Challenges, edited by Ejub Kajan, State University of Novi Pazar, Serbia. This book analyzes obstacles, provides critical assessment of existing approaches, and reviews recent research efforts to overcome interoperability problems in electronic business. It serves as a source of knowledge for researchers, educators, students, and industry practitioners to share and exchange their most current research findings, ideas, practices, challenges, and opportunities concerning electronic business interoperability.

The editor Dr. Kajan contends that "the seventy-one authors [of this book] from fifteen countries and forty different research organizations give an excellent overview on what is going on [in] enterprise interoperability today. … From the research point of view, the analysis of the interoperability problems given in all chapters, the many original results shown, the background and reference sections, and more are all valuable sources. From the educational point of view, the overviews of problems and enabling technologies and many definitions of key terms present a good teaching and learning material at one place."
