The modern classroom is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the inexorable rise of artificial intelligence (AI). The impact of AI on teaching and learning is nothing short of revolutionary, altering the dynamics of education in ways we are only beginning to comprehend. Education has always been a cornerstone of society, a cornerstone now being reshaped by AI. Ungerer and Slade (2022) emphasize the imperative to view AI and AI in education through a lens that recognizes their entanglement with ideological, political, social, economic, and technological factors, dispelling the notion of neutrality. The classroom, once a realm of textbooks and chalkboards, is evolving into a dynamic space where AI-driven tools assist educators, customize learning experiences, and engage students in unprecedented ways. This transformation challenges the traditional roles of teachers and learners, blurring the lines between instruction and exploration. In this chapter, we set the stage for our exploration of AI's impact on education. We begin by defining the scope and significance of AI in teaching and learning. We delve into the historical context of AI in education, tracing its roots and highlighting key milestones. From early computer-assisted instruction to today's advanced AI-driven platforms, the journey of AI in education has been marked by innovation and potential. We also examine the current landscape of AI in education, showcasing notable developments and trends that are shaping classrooms worldwide. AI-powered personalization, adaptive learning systems, and virtual learning environments are becoming integral components of the modern educational experience. Bozkurt et al. (2021) employ a systematic review approach spanning half a century (1970–2020) to investigate AI studies in education, incorporating social network analysis and text-mining methods for comprehensive insights.
