Abstract

In the digital era, businesses strive to harness various advancements in the tech field to attain heightened levels of customer engagement and ensure the effectiveness of their marketing strategies. For instance, digital marketing has the capacity to utilize AI advancements to a significant extent. In particular, nowadays, digital marketers are leveraging a recent large language-model-based chatbot called “ChatGPT,” which enables users to engage in human-like conversations and has unprecedented opportunities to reshape and revolutionize the ecosystem of digital marketing and customer engagement. In this regard, this chapter underscores the transformative potential of ChatGPT in the domain of digital marketing and its profound implications for augmenting customer engagement by reviewing and synthesizing existing literature. Moreover, it considers the ethical implications surrounding AI deployment. By synthesizing existing literature, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge in this domain, guiding future research and practice.

2. Literature Review

2.1. ChatGPT

The acronym “GPT” in ChatGPT denotes “Generative Pre-trained Transformer,”. This cutting-edge AI model, available in variants such as GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 leverages deep learning techniques and a massive dataset to generate human-like text, making it highly proficient in understanding and generating natural language responses. What sets ChatGPT apart is its ability to engage in dynamic and contextually relevant conversations, making it a versatile tool for a wide range of applications. It was unveiled to the world as a research preview on November 30, 2022 (Rivas and Zhao, 2023) and since its launching, ChatGPT has rapidly gained prominence, seizing the imagination of users and professionals alike due to its multifaceted applications across diverse industries. ChatGPT's emergence on the AI scene has been nothing short of revolutionary. Its transformative potential extends to various domains, including healthcare, customer service, education, content creation, and language translation (Mishra and Saumya, 2023; Geroge, George, and Martin, 2023).). It is indeed, leading to widespread use and recognition. By January 2023, it had reached a remarkable milestone, with over 100 million users—a groundbreaking achievement in the realm of consumer software. This accomplishment propelled OpenAI's value to $29 billion (Hu, 2023; Varanasi, 2023).

ChatGPT has abundant advantages over previous AI tools and has significant. Its key capabilities include Natural Language understanding, multi-lingual support, contextual awareness, and customization as well as information memory (Diaddo and Owusu, 2023) which enables supportive communication and effective follow-up corrections (Bishop, 2023). It also excels in problem-solving (Mishra and Saumya, 2023), writing and debugging computer programs, solving exams, and translating and summarizing texts. Moreover, ChatGPT's versatile capabilities enable it to address a wide spectrum of business needs. For instance, it can generate business ideas, retrieve information, summarize documents, respond to inquiries, interact in conversations, and plan travels (Mishra and Saumya, 2023). It can also help in expanding the business’s customer base, penetrating new markets, executing highly efficient marketing campaigns, and nurturing robust relationships with both existing and potential clients (Stokel and Noordern, 2023; Geerling et al., 2023; Avila-Chauvet et al., 2023; Ali, 2023).
