Introduction

Today, we live in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) world (Sarkar, 2016). In other words, it is a rapidly changing world where the context is uncertain. Moreover, interactions are manifold, complex, and marked by a lack of clear causality between actions and outcomes. This changing environment necessitates that businesses become agile and communicative to cope with the uncertainty surrounding our world (Williams, 2015). Crises, whether they be health, environmental, economic, or social, present significant challenges for our contemporary society (Soete, 2021). They are characterized by moments of uncertainty and vulnerability where established systems are put to the test. Such situations underscore the need to rethink our approaches and find innovative solutions to address pressing issues (Price et al., 2022). It is in this context that responsible innovation assumes a crucial role.

Objective

This book aims to delve deeply into the role of responsible innovation in the context of crises, examining the complexities of balancing the urgency of action with respect for ethical principles. It is an opportunity to collectively reflect on how innovation can become a powerful tool for addressing the major challenges of our time while preserving our fundamental values and ensuring a sustainable future for future generations.
