Reviewers Hold the Key to Maintaining Scientific Quality in Peer Review

Even when operating within a single-blind or double-blind peer review process, reviewers can still be recognized for their invaluable work to a journal. It is the duty of members of the editorial review board to maintain the highest ethical standards when conducting reviews, not only for their personal reputations, but for the overall credibility, standing, and character of the journal. In an industry full of non-reputable publishers, keeping reviewers abreast of proper practices and ensuring they feel valued as a member of a board is critical to the long-term success and notoriety of any journal.

As part of their peer review process, IGI Global allows reviewers to receive feedback from the Editor-in-Chief on their reviews. IGI Global’s double-blind peer review process takes place on the eEditorial Discovery^® System, where manuscripts are anonymized and assigned to at least 3 to 5 Editorial Review Board Members. Reviewers are tasked with analyzing a manuscript according to its originality, significance of contribution, coverage of existing literature, organizational structure, and other essential criteria. Within the eEditorial Discovery Submission System, Editors-in-Chief of IGI Global journals are able to rate the reviews completed by members of the review board. Each reviewer is able to see the ranking that was given to them, so long as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal provided a review. Regardless of the ranking from the Editor-in-Chief, these rankings provide viable feedback to the reviewer. If the review receives a less than desirable ranking from the Editor-in-Chief, the reviewer is aware of the fact that a more comprehensive review is expected from the Editor-in-Chief. The reviewer can then use this feedback to improve the quality of his/her review. If the review receives a desirable ranking from the Editor-in-Chief, the reviewer can feel satisfied by conducting a review that meets the high standards of the Editor-in-Chief.

Reviewer recognition is a key piece to the peer review process that often gets overlooked. With the critical work these esteemed individuals perform, it’s imperative to recognize the individuals that contribute to the overall reputation of the journal. IGI Global’s eEditorial Discovery System allows the peer review process to be both transparent and streamlined for Editors-in-Chief and reviewers, ensuring a publication receives ethical standards of review in one, simplified location.

Sites like Publons allow reviewers to input their conducted reviews to be automatically verified or manually verified by the publisher. This allows the reviewer to receive credit for completing their assigned review and increase their reputation, opening future opportunities for promotion. If you have completed a review with an IGI Global journal, create an account at Publons and include the relevant information regarding the review. From there, the review will be verified or disavowed by a staff member at IGI Global.

In addition to Publons, IGI Global also recognizes reviewers with the Reviewer of the Year Award. Due to the rigorous peer review process every IGI Global publication goes through, the academic publisher introduced their Reviewer of the Year Award to distinguish the reviewers at the heart of the essential review process. The award acknowledges an outstanding Editorial Review Board member or an Associate Editor of an IGI Global journal. Nominees, recommended by an Editor-in-Chief, exhibit a record of success in creating timely, quality reviews that assist in the continuation and advancement of an IGI Global journal. The requirements of the award include being a highly active member of an Editorial Review Board or serve as an Associate Editor of an IGI Global journal that has been established for a year, serving as a reviewer for at least a year, fulfilling the minimum requirements for reviews per year, and creating quality reviews that assists in the development of the journal.

Reviewers play an important role in the peer review process, and recognizing their efforts helps improve the quality of reviews and, as a result, the quality of a publication. It is important for publishers and institutions to promote not only research publications, but the reviewers as well.
