Academic librarians play such an integral part of the open access ecosystem and the sustainability of open access publishing models and content distribution. This is showcased through their vested interest in connecting people with information and greater access to scholarly works and the way that they are reinventing their roles to better support open access publishing and the diversity of the body of literature available to researchers.
More recently, librarians have been the bridge between publisher and researcher in continuing to advance the open access publishing movement and significantly aid in generating more open access research for all to consume, share, and build upon.
Specifically, librarians are:
- Sharing and highlighting open access resources on their websites and catalogs
- Boosting the transition of open access through publisher partnerships
- Supporting crowdfunding approaches toward open access funding for publications (especially books)
Recently, IGI Global published its first open access book, the
Handbook of Research on the Global View of Open Access and Scholarly Communications, edited by Dr. Daniel Alemneh, Digital Curation Coordinator for the Digital Libraries Division at the University of North Texas (UNT) libraries, via an agreement with the University of North Texas. Through the University of North Texas’ investment in IGI Global e-Collections and IGI Global’s Transformative Open Access Initiative, platinum open access was supported for this book.

On top of the partnership between UNT and IGI Global that made this first open access book possible, librarians working with IGI Global have also played a big role in coordinating and facilitating communications between their institution and faculty in securing open access funding for individual book chapters and journal articles, lifting a sometimes heavy burden from the researcher by helping them to identify potential funding and/or secure funding for their open access research.
Additionally, as a founding member of the
Association of Global Open Science and Research (AGOSR), IGI Global is committed to creating an environment that fosters an inclusive approach to the accessibility and innovation of open access research by working with publishers, researchers, and librarians to distribute open access content within the research community.
