Are Modern Libraries Capable of Supporting the Need for Technological Innovation?

By IGI Global on Oct 30, 2015
IGI Global Editor Travels To Myanmar Libraries today are constantly challenged by the clash of evolving technology and budgetary restrictions. Technology has provided amazing opportunities in collection development, but having the knowledge and resources to take advantage of these opportunities can be overwhelming.

Modern library and information professionals are expected to be knowledgeable in everything from library automation, networking, internet navigation, database management, statistical software, and more. The constantly changing technologies can bring a certain level of uncertainty to librarians who are confronted with the constant challenges of adaptation and the expectation to be experts of new and emerging software.

The article “Technostress: Effects and Measures Among Librarians in University Libraries in Nigeria” confronts the reality of innovation challenges in library collection and the realities of how librarians can deal with these issues.

The article states “While technostress is well documented in libraries, the world seems unaware of library work as computer related (Clute, 1998). Interestingly, Poole and Emmett (2001) explain that the 1994 Job Rated Almanac ranked librarianship among the 25 least stressful occupations, thereby reinforcing a publicly held image that library work is not a technological field. However, in the process of adapting to the increasingly complex technologies, more users and staff have been experiencing physical and emotional stress (Saunders, 1999).”

“Technostress: Effects and Measures Among Librarians in University Libraries in Nigeria,” written by Owajeme Justice Ofua (Delta State University, Nigeria) and Tiemo Aghwotu Pereware (Niger Delta University Library, Nigeria), is featured in the International Journal of Digital Library Systems (IJDLS). IGI Global recently conducted their first Library Technology Innovation Survey, an opportunity for librarians to share their expertise and insight on technological progression in their libraries. Over a hundred librarians were polled, from institutions and organizations world-wide. The results are in!
