Mathematics of the Head

By IGI Global on Aug 13, 2010
The International Journal of Artificial Life Research (IJALR), one of IGI Global's newest medical technologies and healthcare journals, recently published an exciting new article in its second quarter issue, titled, "A Mathematical Model for a Vibrating Human Head." The article was written by Jagadis Chandra Misra, SOA University, India; Sanchita Dandapat, Indian Institute of Technology, India; and Samaresh Das Adhikary, Indian Institute of Technology, India. In this paper, a mathematical model has been formulated to study the vibration of the human head. In the mathematical analysis of the model, the skull is considered as an anisotropic spherical shell and brain matter is represented as an inviscid compressible fluid. Also, in the model, the translational acceleration is considered as a general function of time. The authors use the method of Laplace transformation to achieve the analytical solution of the problem, while the analytical expressions have been used to compute the stress distribution in the system by resorting to numerical techniques.

This exciting and revolutionary new research is just one of many new ideas covered by IJALR (Editors-in-chief E. Stanley Lee, Kansas State University, USA; and Ping-Teng Chang, Tunghai University, Taiwan). The journal provides a forum on the study of living systems, human level artificial systems, and machines that exhibit intelligent autonomous behavioral characteristics. Presenting researchers and practitioners with access to explore the developments of life-like or human-like forms of systems, IJALR promotes research in emerging disciplines of artificial life to improve and comprehend real-world problems. This journal publishes all concepts, theories, systems, and procedures that exhibit properties, phenomena, or abilities of any living system or human. IJALR is a double blind peer-reviewed journal, published quarterly since January 2010.
