Teaching Case Provides Insight in Graduation Rates

The Case of the College Drop-Outs

By IGI Global on Mar 26, 2013
The Chronicle of Higher Education’s College Completion webpage shows that of the 4.3 million freshmen who started college in the fall of 2004, only about 1.2 million actually graduated. Last year’s dropout rates jumped an estimated 10 percent compared to 2011. At some universities, an estimated 4 out of 10 students will fail to graduate. Despite government funding and programs, keeping students in school is becoming a real issue.

The IGI Global Teaching Case, “A Framework for Examining Data and Taking Action to Increase Student Retention and Graduation”, takes into consideration that student retention and graduation is one of the most difficult challenges facing universities. This case examines the type of data that is generally available and useful to issues of retention, and suggests a variety of possible actions that can be undertaken to address the findings, impact retention (IR) and graduation rates. The framework of IR data and possible actions to address problems revealed by data is based on an evaluation of the nation's largest state university, Texas A&M. The issues revealed are common to many universities, and it is hoped that this sharing of information will assist others in addressing the important issues of retention and graduation rates.
