Abstract

The 2030 agenda for sustainable development is a plan with global implications, and the international community expects the nations that have signed it to devote all of their resources. The subject of the chapter is research on the implementation of the agenda 2030 on sustainable development, in the Republic of Serbia. The accomplishment of the sustainable adopted goals, which aim to promote honorable labor, an inclusive economy, and other aspects that might lead to a better society, is crucial for Serbia. The main goal of the chapter is to establish, based on certain indicators, whether and to what extent the Republic of Serbia has embarked on the path of sustainable development. Since almost half of the time allotted for achieving sustainability goals has already passed, the authors wish to emphasize the urgency of ensuring the necessary preconditions for the implementation of Agenda 2030 in the Republic of Serbia and progress towards achieving it, in cooperation with the public and private sectors, the academic community, civil society organizations, and citizens.

Introduction

In 2015, the United Nations held a summit in New York in September, at which resolution A/RES/70/1 - Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Forum for responsible business) was adopted. The Agenda for Sustainable Development until 2030 represents a strategy that has a universal character. The agenda consists of 17 goals, which are: world without poverty, world without hunger, health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitary conditions, affordable energy from clean sources, dignified work and economic growth, industries - innovations - infrastructure, reducing inequality, sustainable cities, and communities, responsible consumption and production, preserving the climate, preserving the aquatic world, preserving life on Earth, peace-justice-strong institutions, partnering to the goal (Taghipour, 2014). The listed goals include three dimensions of sustainability: the economic category in terms of growth, the social dimension in terms of inclusion, and environmental protection as an ecological dimension (Figure 1). The United Nations agenda represents a global framework for achieving goals that are extremely important for the Republic of Serbia.
