Recommendations are provided for stakeholders to prioritize sustainability, address privacy concerns, bridge the digital divide, and invest in green technologies. Collaboration among stakeholders is underscored as essential for the industry's responsible evolution, advocating for an integrated approach that combines technology with traditional sustainable practices.

Introduction

In order to meet the demands of tourists, the travel industry, the environment, and host communities, sustainable tourism considers the economic, social, and environmental effects of travel both now and in the future. To guarantee broad participation and the development of consensus, it necessitates the informed involvement of all pertinent stakeholders and strong political leadership. A sufficient balance between the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourist development must be developed to ensure its long-term sustainability. Achieving sustainable tourism is a continual process that requires constant monitoring of impacts. Sustainable tourism is seen as a critical instrument for fostering job creation, local cultural promotion, and economic growth while preserving biodiversity and the environment. It may still be challenging for tourists to choose uncrowded locations and sustainable solutions, even if sustainable tourism has gained more attention recently (UN tourism 2023; Avantio, 2023; Statista Research Department, 2024).

An inadequate infrastructure for waste management, recycling, electricity, water, and transportation, greenwashing, excessive waste production, and resource exploitation are only a few of the urgent issues facing sustainable tourism (Shelley, 2022; Dolma Eco-Tourism, 2019; Sustainability leaders united, 2022; Sezerel & Karagoz, 2023). Other difficulties include insufficient resources, poor leadership, a deficiency of time management skills, and a shortage of a critical mass of environmentally friendly travel companies. (Sustainability leaders united, 2022). To overcome these obstacles, more needs to be done to spread awareness of sustainability, stop greenwashing, cut waste, and make sure that environmentally friendly travel is delivered in a way that is both realistic and profitable ((Pan et al., 2018). In addition, resources must be prioritized and allocated, leadership must be strengthened, and a critical mass of sustainable tourism enterprises must be promoted ((Sustainability leaders united, 2022).

For the tourism business to remain viable in the long run and for natural and cultural resources to be preserved, it is imperative that issues facing it are effectively addressed. The incorporation of technical advancements is crucial for accomplishing the objectives of sustainable tourism, as it facilitates the adoption of eco-friendly and efficient methodologies. Technology can be employed as a tool to benefit local communities, lessen the tourism industry's environmental impact, maintain cultural heritage, and promote sustainable tourism (Leigh Ingle, 2023; Rodrigues et al., 2023; Ahmad et al., 2022); El Archi, et al., 2023; Digital Tourism Think Tank, 2022). In this regard, blockchain can support sustainable development, while cloud computing can have a major impact on sustainability by lowering the environmental imprint of tourism (Leigh Ingle, 2023; El Archi, et al., 2023). However, it's crucial to remember that technology should support sustainable tourism initiatives rather than be the defining characteristic. Instead, a comprehensive strategy that emphasizes both conventional sustainable practices and technical breakthroughs is required (Leigh Ingle, 2023). Moreover, utilizing design thinking and establishing innovation ecosystems might aid in utilizing technology for the advancement of sustainable tourism (Digital Tourism Think Tank, 2022).
