Abstract

Today, everything is progressing to ‘Smart' to enhance the environment via technological progress including IoT, big data, AI, ICT, and so on. But, in this whole process, the sustainability of being ‘smart' is implemented by the cloud-based technology, which also acts as an engine. Smart society is another live example of this era that makes potential use of digital technology and sensor devices to improve people's lives through the internet. It also incorporates cloud computing, which significantly benefits them by offering a sustainable environment to access the computing power at large scale, which they could not previously access due to lack of resources. This chapter provide a broad overview of smart society that covers the scope and services, technological pillars, features necessities to be titled as ‘smart', and a sustainable development. Also, it broadly covers the role of cloud computing, related technologies, and generic architecture for the sustainability of smart societies followed by applications with a case study and challenges.

Introduction To Smart Society

Over a decade, the term ‘Smart’ revolves around every new innovation which is technology based and has been utilized with respect to everything from smart framework to a smart planet. Though, being ‘Smart’ is eventually all about the advantages that technology can contribute which means technology must be truly smart when it added value for public and society in terms of improving liveability and resource-efficiency. As the number of communities, cities and societies keep on increasing, they also required to employ smart technology in order to deal with many rising issues, such as; how will technology add value to construct energy efficient buildings and energy systems? How will technology reduce congestion and waste less resources ? How will technology play its role in making our cities or societies more liveable and sustainable? The only solution to all the issues is to implant a smart technological approach that cannot develop just a smart society, but a sustainable and smart society, as discussed by Bruun (2018).

A smart society was defined by Chakravorti and Chaturvedi (2017) as “A society where government thoughtfully deployed the digital technology in order to fulfil the three major goals; Citizens well-beingness, economically strong, and the productiveness of organizations”. The society is making headway to be ‘Smart’ viz. Smart home, Smart parking, Smart car, Smart agriculture, Smart infrastructures, and Smart transportation. Cloud computing act as an engine for the development of ‘smart’ and have become chief component in the improvement of numerous aspects of life. Cloud is considered more than an Internet and an exemplar of green technology which support environmental sustainability directly or indirectly in organizations.

This section will try to address an overview on understanding the Scope and Services of Smart Society, technological pillars, Certain features or characteristic requirements to be titled as ‘smart’ followed by brief discussion on sustainable Development and Smart Society.

Review of Literature

Internet of Things and cloud computing together put a lot of efforts in the domain of making the societies smarter one with the more improved governances, education and lifestyle for citizens. For the same, number of researchers has gained the attention towards the designing and implementation of various application and services that enhance the environment of society.

Tan (2018) discussed in an article about the crucial role of cloud computing to the future of next level societies. Smart Society (2019) published a white paper on building the better future with smart technologies for citizens in which they tried to cover various case studies from different dimensions. Foresti, et al. (2020) discussed big data technology for smart maintenance by proposing an approach which is able to govern the data flow in man-machine interaction. Jiménez, Solanas and Falcone (2014) provided the manifold synopsis on interoperability of e-government, latest advances, also discussed opportunities followed by issues of operability in e-government. Mehmood, et al. (2017) introduced a framework for smart societies that provide teaching and learning services through the system known as UTiLearn and the framework was validated on 11 datasets.
