Abstract

The Indian economy is driven by its agricultural sector. Industries based on agricultural produce are important as they give a competitive market for the agricultural production. Mustard is one of the major cash crops selected for this chapter. Mustard oil is used as cooking medium as well as other purpose in Indian households. Selecting the best location for setting up a mustard mill can be considered as a multiple criteria decision-making problem (MCDM), and ELECTRE III method is used and explained in detail to rank different location options in increasing order of suitability.

Multi Criteria Decision Making Approach

Multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) or multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a sub-discipline of operations research. MCDM is concerned with structuring and solving decision and planning problems involving multiple criteria. Latest trends show application of MCDM method many agriculture related areas. Topsis and Fuzzy AHP are used for Efficient and effective manner of agriculture supply mechanization services to the farmer (Zangeneh, 2015). ELECTRE III is successfully implemented for ranking the agro-energy regions according to their potentials of biomass production (Preethi and Chandrasekar, 2015). ELECTRE applied in effective agriculture banking for providing financial sources to agricultural producers (Dincer, Hacioglu, and Yuksel, 2016). An agricultural product recommendation service on a mobile platform to assist consumers in deciding which agricultural product to buy (Macary et. al, 2013). ELECTRE acted as useful decision aid tool for implementing public agricultural and environmental policies for protecting the ecological areas by identifying erosion risk zones (Majdi, 2013). ELECTRE model applied for assessment of de-desertification alternatives those can be effective in controlling the reclamation of disturbed land and avoiding destruction of areas at risk (Solecka, 2014). Multiple criteria evaluation of 40 characteristics of e-learning platforms is done with ELECTRE (Kumar, Premi, and Thomas).
