Abstract

This chapter examines the modeling and simulation of energy storage (battery, flywheel, etc.) systems interfaced to the power grid by using power electronic device, like chopper module, Rectifier module, and filter circuits, which are essential to the load balance between supply and demand, and to eliminate harmonics and to ensure efficient, cost effective, and reliable operations. Energy storage system in power grid is the same as memory in computer system. Energy efficiency is a key performance indicator for energy storage system. The energy storage system is the most promising component to enhance the system reliability and flexibility.

Introduction

The grid scale energy storage system consists of three main components, such as energy storage medium itself (Electrical energy storage system (EESS)), power converters interface that links the storage medium to the grid (Rectifier module, chopper and filter) and controller that are planned to get a grid control and its objective is do not elaborated operation of the power converter grid interface or the performance of electrical energy storage system (Fares et al. 2015, Schewe, 2005). The major challenge of power converters during the designing are reliability, cost, efficiency and power density (AC to AC converter, DC to DC converter and filter) system and interacting with energy storage system. There are various practical applications of energy storage, but the requirements vary from one event to another event (Alhelou et al., 2019; Makdisie et al., 2018; Alhelou et al., 2018; Alhelou et al., 2016; Haes Alhelou et al., 2019; Njenda et al., 2018). Nevertheless, it is not each storage technology operates equally to be useful in any condition because of environmental factors, shortage of input source and also some other draw back to the load. In fact, the practicalities of energy storages rely on their technical characteristics, i.e. response times, efficiency, power rating and capacity for a certain application (Dötsch, 2007; Khan et al., 2019; Khan et al., 2018; Khan et al., 2017; Banteywalu et al., 2019; Anteneh et al., 2019; Molla et al., 2019, Molla et al., 2018, Jariso et al. 2018). A power electronic circuit manages the flow of electrical energy between the hydro-power grid and wind power grid (Hoffmann, 2010). There are two types of power electronic system discussed in this chapter; these are power module (converter) and filter. Therefore this chapter deals with the modeling of energy storage system with its power electronic interface with grid.

Key Terms in this Chapter

State of charge (SOC): It is the level of charge of an electric battery relative to its capacity.

Battery Energy Storage: A battery energy storage system is a system that stores energy via the use of a battery technology for it to be used at a later time.

Flywheel Storage: The flywheel system operates on the principle of kinetic energy for storing and releasing energy depending on load demand.
