Abstract

The front end of new product development consists of generating ideas and selecting the best idea from the idea pool. It becomes challenging for the companies to select the best idea from the idea pool. Companies have used various frameworks, tools, and techniques to choose the best idea for successful new product development. This study proposes a new idea selection framework called BRICEC, consisting of business importance, reach, impact, confidence, efforts, and cannibalization. The study focuses on comparing the popular idea selection frameworks in product development along with the BRICEC framework, critically analyzing the research gaps in idea selection processes through literature reviews, explaining the BRICEC framework in detail with examples, and highlighting how BRICEC is a more efficient framework from the rest of the popular frameworks. Proper idea selection in the right time frame will help companies attain competitive advantage and define the success of the new product.

2. Front End Of New Product Development

The front-end idea selection of product development involves four differently addressed stages as mentioned in the studies. These primarily are idea selection, idea assessment, idea evaluation, and idea screening (Netz, 2018). But out of all four stages, the idea screening becomes the decision-making process (Netz, 2018).

The new product development involves first principle thinking (Buhl et al., 2019) from two different spaces of domains, i.e., problem space and solution space (Liu & Lu, 2020). Breaking down the problem into an elementary level wherein the elements cannot be further broken down. The elements then form the functional blocks for the whole problem.

The problem space in developing a new product will involve targeting the user personas and the user segments, understanding the user problems, understanding their daily habits and behavior while performing a specific task, jobs-to-be-done, how big the problem for the users, how many users are affected by the problem, and how much relevant do the problem stand in respect to the recent times.
