Technological advancement has changed the paved of communication whereas the immense popularity of mobile technology among the students has given the new horizons of users connectivity (Chan, Walker, & Gleaves, 2015; Rosaline & Johnson, 2020; Suki, 2013). The smartphones that we used to connect have changed the way of communication in a completely diverse way (Kamboj, Rana, & Drave, 2020). The smartphones can perform multitasking in a single-handle that has strong operating systems that replaced button phones (Anshari, Almunawar, Shahrill, Wicaksono, & Huda, 2017). The users' smartphones usage patterns have changed due to affordability of services, fastest connectivity, and most importantly the dependency of smartphones make the change of everyday routine activities (Anshari et al., 2017; Chan et al., 2015; Kamboj et al., 2020; Rosaline & Johnson, 2020; Suki, 2013). The multi-usage of smartphones both in personal and professional activities makes a device of communication, entertainment, learning, and internet browsing (Rosaline & Johnson, 2020). The popularity, functionality, and convenience of smartphones among users have accelerated the smartphone market in a booming position (Chan et al., 2015; Park & Chen, 2007; Soikkeli, Karikoski, & Hämmäinen, 2013). To meet the smartphones users demand multiple mobiles manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Nokia, Google Nexus and many more mobile operators have developed android operating systems to provide the users with more functions, applications, and supports in the most convenient (Ting, Lim, Patanmacia, Low, & Ker, 2011).
The continuous demand for smartphone adoption among university students leads to a hike in smartphones manufacturing the young consumers' willingness to adopt the updated version of the smartphones (Arif, Aslam, & Ali, 2016). The study conducted by Suki (2013) addressed that university students are one the major contributors to smartphone sales and focused on university students' smartphone dependency in Malsmartphonepectives. The researchers' Ting et al. (2011)researchers' highlighting issues of university students' smartphone dependency and that ultimately led to purchasing behavior. The multiple tasking features, handy in use, the convenience offered by the manufacturers in various ways the usage of smartphones give the pathways to depend on this device frequently (S. Kim & Baek, 2018; Rosaline & Johnson, 2020; Suki, 2013). This study aims to focus on the smartphone dependency of university students in the Bangladesh context. Besides, the study also assessed the role of social needs, social value, and social influences of university students that influences them on using smartphones dependency.
