About Us

Shilpa Balan

Dr. Shilpa Balan is an Associate Professor in the College of Business and Economics at California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Balan earned her Ph.D. degree in Management Information Systems focusing on Data Mining and Data Analytics from the University of Mississippi. Dr. Balan’s broad research interests are in Business Analytics, Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare.

Dr. Balan has received numerous awards for research and mentorship of students including the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Research and Mentorship award in 2019 by California State University, Los Angeles, the Graduate Faculty Mentorship Award for Research Activities and Scholarship in 2018 by California State University, Los Angeles, and the Most Promising Research award by California State University, Los Angeles in 2016. Dr. Balan is a recipient of education grants from Tableau, Qlik, IBM Watson Analytics, and Microsoft Azure. She has been awarded several research grants for the academic years 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2018-2019 from California State University, Los Angeles for conducting research on big data analytics in healthcare. Dr. Balan was conferred the Faculty Scholar award at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing event in 2016.

Dr. Balan currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Healthcare. In addition, she serves as the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Applied Research on Public Health Management. Furthermore, Dr. Balan serves on the Editorial Review Board of the International Journal of Healthcare Information Systems and Informatics (IJHISI), International Journal of Big Data and Analytics in Healthcare and the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
