The Ultimate Security Program

Mounting apprehension regarding personal privacy and security has been a recent cause for concern since the WikiLeaks of Edward Snowden. The former NSA agent has been both ridiculed and praised by people around the world, challenging citizens to draw the lines of what information should and should not be considered government property.

Has the US overstepped its boundaries by secretly implementing intrusive and aggressive programs? The NSA will argue that such data confiscation is in support of the public good, to ensure safety and security. An interesting comparison is addressed in the IGI Global article, “Internet Users’ Privacy Concerns and Beliefs About Government Surveillance: An Exploratory Study of Differences Between Italy and the United States,” featured in the Journal of Global Information Management (JGIM).

This study examines the differences in individual privacy concerns and beliefs about government surveillance in the countries of Italy and the United States. By evaluating cross-cultural differences and perspectives in antecedents to e-commerce use in both of these countries, best practices and functional boundaries can be established. This research discusses privacy concerns, the perceived need for government surveillance, and government intrusion concerns.

Written by research professionals in Italy and the United States- Tamara Dinev, Paul Hart, and Ilaria Serra of the Florida Atlantic University, USA, and Massimo Bellotto and Vincenzo Russo of the University of Calabria, Italy, this article confers the implications of research findings and addresses directions for future work in the area of government surveillance.

Edited by Choon Ling Sia of City University of Hong Kong, the Journal of Global Information Management (JGIM) provides a forum for researchers and practitioners to share leading-edge knowledge in the global information resource management area. A valuable part of IGI Global’s InfoSci®-Journals Database, this research is one of the hundreds of resources available on the growing online database collection of more than 150 full-text journals.
