Hear From Expert Dr. Nilmini Wickramasinghe

How Technology is Propelling the Healthcare Industry Forward

By Brittany Haynes on Feb 20, 2020

While healthcare has been known to embrace cutting-edge technologies to prevent, detect, and cure diseases, the global healthcare industry has been slow to adopt technologies to promote higher quality practice management and administrative needs. Currently, healthcare faces major challenges such as increasing costs, a move to a preventative care environment, and technologically savvy patients with high expectations. To better understand and adapt to these changes within healthcare management techniques, Dr. Nilmini Wickramasinghe, from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia & Epworth HealthCare, Australia, shares her latest research on this topic from her publication the Handbook of Research on Optimizing Healthcare Management Techniquesin an IGI Global interview below.

What inspired you to pursue research activities in healthcare management?

Healthcare is a dynamic domain. Today, technology enables us to provide the possibility of superior care for all with higher quality, better access, and higher value. However, there also needs to be attention paid to designing, developing, and deploying successful solutions. It is addressing these challenges that I find particularly exciting, and to be able to move the needle and work to develop better care for all enabled through technology is what inspired me to pursue this area of research.

Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?

We are all touched by healthcare, so it is an area that impacts us all. Moreover, today’s technology is a key driver that also plays a significant part in our lives. The confluence of both is clearly important and has far reaching implications for everyone.

In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of your research to its community of users?

I would like to think my research helps all healthcare stakeholders—patients and their families, clinicians, hospitals, payers, regulators, and the community. I would also like to think it helps the discipline and my fellow researchers as we continue to build stronger research, theory, and outcomes. One specific example is my work with mobile solutions for supporting individuals with diabetes; patients and clinicians who have used the solution have told me of its benefits. Additionally, it has helped to move the research in the area of mobile phones in healthcare forward in multiple ways, including in terms of theory, design of solutions, and better patient and clinician satisfaction.

What are the future directions of your research areas?

My research is focused on the design, development, and deployment of technology solutions to effect superior care. This is a never-ending area, and I continue to look at designing appropriate solutions to support various healthcare issues and challenges.

What are some other evolving research trends you have observed in your field over the past several months and what would you say are some of the innovative research directions you foresee in the future? How do you feel your publication sets the pace for these innovations?

The whole area of Health 4.0, or the digital transformation of healthcare, is very exciting, dynamic, and evolving at a rapid pace. Every day, there are more and more possibilities. I believe my research helps to provide a systematic delivery framework and business model so that "responsible" solutions can be developed that serve to support the realization of appropriate healthcare value propositions and patient-centered care.

What has your experience been like publishing with IGI Global?

I have collaborated with IGI Global since 2001 and have always found them to be pleasant to work with, supportive, and helpful. I believe it is important to establish good working relationships so we can all work together to realize shared goals and visions, and I certainly have been able to do this with IGI Global.
