The movie Jaws established sharks as fearsome predators that lurked near beaches and attacked anyone who set foot in an ocean. The 1975 classic movie left a strong impression on the cultural consciousness that bloomed into a long-lasting fascination with sharks as swimming with sharks is now a popular tropical vacation activity and shark teeth and fins are now high in demand.
A recent Forbes article highlighted Discovery Channel’s 30th annual Shark Week event, which aims to educate as well as entertain viewers with shark-oriented programming. During this year’s television event, there are was a clear message to raise awareness to sharks’ dwindling numbers, due to them being hunted for trophies, for their meat, or utilized to help increase tourism. If the apex predator is hunted to extinction, the rest of their ecosystem will collapse, putting countless other species of creatures in jeopardy.
