Repairing a Damaged Trust

By IGI Global on Jun 26, 2013
President Obama’s reputation is on the line as he attempts to answer questions and deflect criticism in light of the recent NSA scandal. But the more fragile relationship in question is that between American citizens and the government. Can we trust the government?

According to John Zogby’s Forbes article, Mending America's Broken Trust:

"Successful societies rely on trust in each other and on the institutions that sustain us. We are in a period where trust in government, big business, finance, journalism and public education is perilously low.

"However, I don’t fear our nation is on the brink of dissolution, even though our Zogby Interactive Survey for Forbes finds less than a majority having even just some confidence in several of our most important institutions. In fact, of the 17 institutions our survey asked about, our panel of likely voters did not have “a lot of confidence” in any (military ranked highest at 47%)."

To better thrive and succeed as active citizens, this element of trust needs to be restored. Feeling targeted or victimized will just put Americans in a position where they will feel entitled to take advantage of government programs, refuse to pay taxes, etc.

In the Case Study, “Generating Citizen Trust in E-Government Security,” authors Rana Tassabehji, Tony Elliman, and John Mellor, all of the University of Bradford, UK, evaluate and develop a strategy to encourage a new trust-building model between government and citizens through the implementation and use of e-government. This case presents one way in which communication between citizens and government in the e-government environment can ensure that citizens are able to make informed decisions for engagement, based on the degree of security to that is implemented.
