A Quality OA Model: IGI Global Announces New Open Access Initiative

By IGI Global on May 30, 2018
Open Access ButtonHershey, PA—Wednesday, May 30, 2018—IGI Global, an international academic publisher, recently announced their new Open Access initiative. For any library that invests in an IGI Global journal database, IGI Global will match the library’s investment with a fund of equal value to go toward subsidizing the open access article processing charge (APC) for their students, faculty, and staff at that institution when their work is submitted and accepted under open access into an IGI Global journal housed within that collection.*

“IGI Global’s philosophy from day one has been, and will continue to be, publishing content based on the innovative nature and quality presented in the work as opposed to focusing purely on profitability,” stated Dr. Mehdi Khosrow-Pour, President and CEO of IGI Global. “So, while we understand the need for there to be article processing charges associated with publishing under open access in order to cover the costs of producing peer-reviewed journal content, we also feel that it is important for publishers to review these fees, and determine in what ways could these costs be subsidized?”

This initiative was created in response to the benefits of publishing Open Access, enabling researchers to share their work without the high subscription costs imposed by major publishing companies while balancing the costs of producing a peer-reviewed journal (including the resources and human labor to undergo the double-blind peer review process and select the reviewers, copy editing and proofreading, typesetting, printing, online hosting, promotion and distribution). Therefore, researchers will not only have their OA article processing fees waived for their accepted articles but be able to publish with a quality, reputable publisher.

For libraries in developing countries the match on their investment will be doubled allowing equal opportunities for researchers of those countries to publish under a credible Open Access model. For those who submit a paper under this new initiative, the open access fees will be waived after the student, faculty, or staff’s paper has been vetted and accepted into an IGI Global journal and the fund can only be used toward publishing OA in an IGI Global journal.

Coupled with IGI Global’s simple, transparent pricing on their InfoSci-Databases including InfoSci-Journals, a collection of 175+ journals, for an annual subscription price as low as $US 5,100, it is a manageable way for librarians and researchers to come together to help expand the body of knowledge.

“For instance, if a university library is subscribed to InfoSci-Journals for US$ 5,100, IGI Global will waive US$ 5,100 in its current open access article processing charge for students, faculty, and staff of the institution” explained Lindsay Wertman, Managing Director. “This alleviates the need to seek funding/grants for researchers to publish open access and also, provides librarians with an affordable way to garner forward-thinking content.”

Additionally, if the institutions library subscribes to one of IGI Global’s five smaller discipline-focused journal databases, the academic publisher will match the investment made by the library to go towards when researchers submit their work to any journal within that specific discipline.

“Furthermore, in addition to the benefits that come with open access content sharing, IGI Global will be making all of its current and future published open access journal articles freely available at a dedicated site where researchers from around the world will have access to the posted contents without any embargos or limitations,” Nick Newcomer, Director of Marketing expressed.
