Purdue University and U.S. Government Create “Flying Laboratories” to Increase Biofuel and Food Production

By Brittany Haynes on Dec 17, 2019
In response to the growing global demand for energy and food sustainability, a Purdue University-affiliated agbioscience start-up created a multi-sensor drone technology that will provide an analytical solution to increase food and fuel production, called “flying laboratories.”

This new technology uses sensors, processing, and artificial intelligence to enable plant breeders to easily scale their operations through faster, automated, and consistent data, and according to a recent EurekAlert! article, it has already been implemented by the U.S. government in the improvement of crops for biofuel. In addition to collecting data for plant breeding, the start-up is working on advancing this technology to be implemented into programs for natural resources, infrastructure, and archeological survey applications.

You can learn more about the latest developments of multi-sensor drone technology and topics surrounding some of the most innovative research areas including artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, environmental science and agriculture, and more from IGI Global book publications, specifically the Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, Fourth Edition (10 Volumes). View information about this title and others on the IGI Global Online Bookstore. You can also view these and related titles on IGI Global’s InfoSci®-Books database. Check with your library to see if you have access to this database of more than 5,300 reference books. If your library is not currently subscribed to InfoSci-Books or InfoSci-Journals, please recommend them to your institution’s electronic resources librarian. By having your library subscribe to these databases you can also benefit from complimentary open access (OA) publishing with IGI Global! As stated above, all of the above research is featured in IGI Global’s InfoSci®-Books, a database of over 5,300+ reference books containing over 100,000+ chapters. Featuring IGI Global’s robust collection of edited and authored reference books, handbooks of research, critical explorations, case books, and research insights, IGI Global's InfoSci®-Books database is being offered with an annual subscription (2000-2020) as low as US$ 9,450 (one-time perpetual purchase for current copyright year (2020) offered as low as US$ 20,500*). This database ensures that librarians can affordably acquire emerging research for their institutions.

Additionally, when a library invests in IGI Global's InfoSci®-Books database, IGI Global will match the library’s investment with a fund of equal value to go toward subsidizing the OA article processing charges (APCs) for their students, faculty, and staff at that institution when their work is submitted and accepted under OA into an IGI Global journal.**

Purchase or recommend this database to your institution’s librarian.

**The fund will be offered on an annual basis and expire at the end of the subscription period. The fund would renew as the subscription is renewed for each year thereafter. The open access fees will be waived after the student, faculty, or staff’s paper has been vetted/accepted into an IGI Global journal as requested by the author(s) of the paper. Libraries in developing countries will have the match on their investment doubled.
