November Symposium Presented by Dr. Andrea Edmundson

IGI Global editor Dr. Andrea Edmundson recently hosted a symposium entitled "Modifying Online Classes for Non-U.S. Learners," held on November 17, 2011. This symposium was a part of IGI Global's Online Educational Symposium Series sponsored by InfoSci®-Journals.
Dr. Edmundson's symposium was extremely well attended, with approximately 50 participants from the higher education community. Those attending the session interacted with Dr. Edmundson via a live chat and question feed, and listened to her discussion of typical challenges faced by non-American students in U.S. designed courses. The informative session touched on learning from the students' perspective and how faculty can promote a more ‘equitable learning' environment for them. Dr. Edmundson noted her experiences in multiple countries and read excerpts from international students regarding country- and culture-specific learning techniques that are helpful when dealing with non-U.S. learners.
Dr. Edmundson used her expertise in culturally appropriate instructional design to explain how aligning course content, instruction, and multimedia use can improve student success in online or classroom courses involving non-U.S. learners. Dr. Edmundson's book, Cases on Globalized and Culturally Appropriate E-Learning: Challenges and Solutions, also cites cultural challenges faced by learners across the globe and looks at ways to identify and overcome these challenges for student success.
