The Fast-Approaching Future of Patient Care

New “Body-on-a-Chip” is Projecting Human Cell Reaction and Paving the Way for Personalized Treatment

By IGI Global Author Relations Team on Jul 24, 2019

According to a recent ScienceNews article, scientists have created a new multi-channel 3D microfluidic cell culture chip called a “body-on-a-chip system” that is providing a more holistic viewpoint on how drugs effect human organs and cells. Unlike the previous “organ-on-a-chip system” that only enabled one cell to be studied, this new system contains five chambers to house different cells that are all connected by channels that circulate nutrients to mimic blood flow in the human body.

Through this breakthrough, scientists will now be able to gauge human cells’ reaction to drugs more accurately and be able to test different drugs or drug combinations without having to use test subjects. Additionally, it is enabling medical professionals to tailor treatments to individuals and is bringing new light into cancer treatment, as scientists are testing new drug combinations on bone marrow cancer cells and breast cancer cells.

With these new advancements in Medicine and Healthcare, find below resources on drug delivery, pharmacology, biotechnology, and more. All of these resources are featured in IGI Global’s InfoSci®-Journals database.
