Narcissism and Smartphone Addiction

By IGI Global on Jun 1, 2015
Narcissism And Smartphone Addiction Smartphones should come with health warnings according to a study from the University of Derby, which examined the relationships between narcissism, personality, and smartphone addiction.

Published in the International Journal of Cyber Behavior, Psychology and Learning, the study found that 13% of participants in the study were actually addicted to their phones, with the average user spending 3.6 hours per day on their device. The majority of participants said their smartphone use caused distraction from many aspects of their lives, including employment, hobbies, and studies.

Entitled “Smartphone Use, Addiction, Narcissism, and Personality: A Mixed Methods Investigation,” the article featuring the study is written by University of Derby scholars Claire Pearson and Dr. Zaheer Hussain. Dr. Hussain remarked in an article featured in The Guardian, “People need to know the potential addictive properties of new technologies. It [the warning] could be before they purchase them or before they download an app. If you’re downloading a game such as Candy Crush or Flappy Bird there could be a warning saying that you could end up playing this for hours and you have other responsibilities [that could be neglected].”

The study showed that narcissism and levels of neuroticism were linked to addiction as well, and the authors suggest that smartphones can actually create the former in users. “Narcissism is a negative personality trait and if a person is spending a lot of time on Facebook or Twitter they’re more likely to display these types of traits,” said Dr. Hussain. “If adverse effects of smartphones are well advertised, users might realize that despite using the device for improving communications, it can easily lead to narcissistic actions which can potentially breakdown familial relationships.”

The International Journal of Cyber Behavior, Psychology and Learning (IJCBPL) offers a forum for the academic exchange of new ideas and research findings related to psychological aspects and serves as a vehicle for promoting techniques and methodologies derived from rigorous research and practices that use psychological and cognitive principles to design and develop cyber learning. Edited by Dr. Robert K. Atkinson (Arizona State University, USA) and Dr. Zheng Yan (University at Albany - SUNY, USA), IJCBPL is indexed by SCOPUS, ACM Digital Library, Cabell’s Directories, DBLP, and Google Scholar, among others.
