How Music is Changing Students After Years of Common Core Cuts

Schools are mandating standardized education and testing (“Common Core”), which some argue devalues arts and humanities in society, as shown by the overwhelming number of schools that are completely without arts and music programs. This includes the Santee School District in California, USA, which was left without a music program for decades, according to a recent article from The San Diego Union-Tribune. Administrators in the Santee School District were able to bring back an after-school music program and saw their students thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Of the many benefits of a comprehensive music education, students typically show improvements in both academic learning and social well-being. Math and reading scores tend to rise in the classroom, while socially, children develop stronger hand-eye coordination, greater discipline and determination, self-confidence, and teamwork skills. Alumni of Santee schools and others in the area who graduated before budget cuts are thrilled for the return of music and the opportunities it provides the students, and many are advocating for instrument donations and expansions of other music programs near and far.

With March being music in our schools month, budget cuts to music and other arts programs are in the forefront.
