Keeping Up With the Cup: Mobile Apps for the World Cup

By IGI Global on Jun 26, 2014
The 2014 World Cup is a hot topic right now, with fans around the world getting involved in support of their team. Googletrend reports that there have been over a billion searches related to the World Cup since the games began on June 12. With the game’s popularity spreading like wildfire, fans are engaging in new ways to share on the action- and with Internet technologies, they can do this in real time while watching the game.

Keeping Up With The Cup: Mobile Apps For The World Cup A multitude of mobile apps have been making their way onto the market, tracking game and player stats and providing feeds to collaborate on the events of the game as they happen.

In 2001, IGI Global authors Robert Schleicher (Technical University of Berlin, Germany), Alireza Sahami Shirazi (University of Duisburg-Essen and University of Stuttgart, Germany), Michael Rohs (Technical University of Berlin and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany), Sven Kratz (Technical University of Berlin, Germany) and Albrecht Schmidt (University of Duisburg-Essen and University of Stuttgart, Germany) collaborated on the article “WorldCupinion Experiences with an Android App for Real-Time Opinion Sharing During Soccer World Cup Games,” for the International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction (IJMHCI). WorldCupinion was one of the first apps developed in this area. Now there are literally hundreds of apps for the games, the most popular being the FIFA Official App, which lets you enter the “global stadium” and follow the matches with minute-by-minute updates. Another app, the SBS, has matches available on a live feed, with a delay of roughly 40 seconds.

The method of implementation discussed in the article “WorldCupinion Experiences with an Android App for Real-Time Opinion Sharing During Soccer World Cup Games” laid basic framework and design that is used in apps for the 2014 World Cup. This article analyzes other mobile phone sports apps, real-time emotion sharing, and use of a mobile phone as a research tool; as well as app design and architecture. Presenting results on rating activity during games and discussing experiences with deploying the WorldCupinion app over four weeks during the 2010 World Cup, this article addresses challenges and opportunities faced, providing an outlook on future work in this area.
