IGI Global Titles Mirror University Research Goals
By
IGI Global
on
Jun 11, 2010
As a leader in dissemination of innovative technological research, IGI Global offers an expansive range of titles adaptable for course use. From bioinformatics to business intelligence, IGI offers a publication for almost every class in the technological realm. In this newsletter issue, we take a closer look at some of the most innovative university departments, as compiled by Popular Mechanics, and suggest a recent or upcoming IGI Global release that would be appropriate for course adoption in that specialty (
www.popularmechanics.com/science/3491456
).
Research Focus: Robotics
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is home to the world's largest robotics research department in academia. Carnegie Mellon University's Robotic Institute currently hosts eight research centers, each with a unique focus. The Center for the Foundations of Robotics gives students the opportunity to get their feet wet, learning fundamentals through theory and experimentation as they begin their voyage into the robotics world. The Medical Robotics Technology Center teams with healthcare professionals in the Pittsburgh area to perfect the newest medical technologies, allowing the students to implement their valuable advancements in a real world environment. The National Robotics Engineering Center gives advanced students opportunity to design, build, and potentially market their robots, through partnerships with government and industry professionals. With classes such as "Gadgetry," "Humanoids," and "Advanced Mobile Robot Development," CMU robotics students mix theory, experimentation, and application to learn the ins-and-outs of robotic innovation (
www.cmu.edu
).

The
Handbook of Research on Synthetic Emotions and Sociable Robotics: New Applications in Affective Computing and Artificial Intelligence
by Dr. Jordi Vallverdu and David Cascacuberta, both of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain, covers topics such as emotion simulation and emotion synthetic development, as well as modeling and design of social robots. "(This book)…provides a timely snapshot of research at the leading edge of a young and exciting field. This handbook surveys the latest research in affective computing and emotional robotics in a succinct and accessible manner," describes Dr. Dylan Evans, researcher at the University College Cork, Ireland.

Research Focus: Practical Engineering
With an industry-wide focus on more practical education practices, Olin College, USA, has designed their curriculum to expose engineering students to as much real world and hands-on experience as possible before they graduate. Combining traditional engineering education with emphasis on business, communications, and engineering connections to culture, Olin offers courses such as "Fundamentals of Machine Shop Operations," "Seeing and Hearing: Communicating with Photographs, Video and Sound," and "The Wired Ensemble- Instruments, Voices, Players" (
www.olin.edu
).
Related IGI Global Title:
Technology-Assisted Problem Solving for Engineering Education: Interactive Multimedia Applications
by Manjit Singh Sidhu, of the Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia, explores best practices in assisting students in understanding engineering concepts through interactive and virtual environments. The editor explains, "In the case of engineering education which depends on static images, diagrams and complex mathematical computations in the traditional classroom, the employment of multimedia in teaching provides a better treatment in enriching the learning experiences by providing a multi-sensory perspective."

Research Focus: Aerospace Engineering
When Buzz Aldrin is one of your predecessors in the program, you know the coursework is going to be exciting. MIT's Aeronautics and Astronautics Department "prepares engineers for success and leadership in the conception, design, implementation, and operation of aerospace and related engineering systems" (
http://web.mit.edu/aeroastro/
). They must do it well, because Popular Mechanics reports that one-third of the Earth's astronauts to walk on the moon graduated from this program. Out of this world courses include "Flight Vehicle Aerodynamics," "Spacecraft and Aircraft Sensors and Instrumentation," and "Space Systems Development."
Related IGI Global Title:
Computational Models, Software Engineering, and Advanced Technologies in Air Transportation: Next Generation Applications
by Li Weigang, University of Brasilia, Brazil, Alexandre de Barros, University of Calgary, Canada, and Italo Romani de Oliveira, Atech Tecnologias Críticas, Brazil, brings together renowned researchers and professionals from the industry, government and academia as contributors in a publication to disseminate and stimulate ideas to improve efficiency, safety and quality in air transportation. The editors believe this reference is overdue, as "thousands of scientists, engineers, economists, pilots, air traffic controllers, business persons and many other sorts of professionals are producing knowledge and technologies to enable safer, more efficient and environmentally friendly air transportation."

Research Focus: Gaming
Mothers across the country would probably cringe collectively at the thought of sending their children to college to study video games, but that is exactly what students at the University of California-Irvine, USA are doing. Through classes like "Computer Game Development" and "Interactive Digital Media," undergraduates in the Computer Science department can declare a concentration in Game Culture and Technology to develop skills in the planning, design, creation, and engineering of the future of digital, multimodal, web-based, and virtual reality games (
www.uci.edu
).
Related IGI Global Title:
Game Sound Technology and Player Interaction: Concepts and Developments
by Mark Grimshaw, of the University of Bolton, UK, includes research on using sound to create fantasy, cultural and social impacts on game sound selection, and emotion affected by particular game sounds. This innovative title explores the relationship between sounds, music, and special effects and the players who experience them. This title will be available later this year.
