Fashion Gets a Technology Makeover

Gerry Weber International, a German-based women's clothing designer and retailer, was recently recognized by RFID Journal for Best RFID Implementation. According to a note about the award on RFID Journal's Web site, Gerry Weber "is employing radio frequency identification [RFID] to track individual clothing items from the point of manufacture to the point of sale. The company is RFID-tracking approximately 20 percent of the 25 million items that it produces annually under its multiple brand names."

This RFID technology has a variety of applications for the company. It can be used to identify the exact problem in the event of a missing or delayed shipment, and to make sure that the correct shipments are sent to each retail store. This technology has also been used in taking inventory and making that process more efficient, allowing the stores to take inventory more often.

Christian von Grone, the CIO of Gerry Weber, says of his company's use of the technology on the company Web site, "There are no question marks concerning the future of RFID. The interest in our work has been overwhelming. RFID has a great future in the apparel industry."

Fashion Supply Chain Management: Industry and Business AnalysisRFID is just one of many emerging technologies that global designers and retailers have implemented to make business more efficient, particularly in the area of supply chain management. New research is necessary to look at areas of supply chain management universal to all business and specific to the fashion industry. IGI Global, an information science and technology publisher, is therefore proud to announce the release of one of its newest titles, Fashion Supply Chain Management: Industry and Business Analysis, edited by Tsan-Ming Choi, Ph.D., Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong.

Fashion Supply Chain Management (FSCM) is an important topic in the modern fashion industry. In addition to the traditional functions of logistics management in fashion companies, which include inventory management, transportation management, and facility control, FSCM places a strong emphasis on collaboration and partnership among channel members along the fashion supply chain. Obviously, FSCM provides a very strong area for establishing a competitive edge for fashion companies. This invaluable reference focuses on reporting both quantitative research on FSCM and exploratory studies on emerging supply chain management issues in the fashion industry.

As a pioneering text which reports many important research results in quantitative FSCM, this reference will help both academicians and practitioners understand more about the latest development and solution schemes in FSCM.
