Students’ motivation will increase with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) research
Enrich the Classrooms With Information and Communication Technologies (ICT): Hear From Expert Dr. David Fonseca
By
Sharlene Oong
on
Dec 11, 2018
Since the boom of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education, students have been able to reap its’ benefits which includes accessibility, as well as the affordability. However, as students are exposed the advantages, they also come across the disadvantages of ICT, where valuable information can be
used for ill intentions
. This ongoing phenomenon poses a challenge to education, where faculty and teachers are continuously seeking for ways on how to stimulate active learning and promote ICT-rich environments.
Dr. David Fonseca
from La Salle Campus Barcelona, and co-editor of the publication,
Handbook of Research on Applied E-Learning in Engineering and Architecture Education
, shares how his research in ICT in education will create a richer learning environment, in an IGI Global interview.
What inspired you to pursue research activities in your research area?
The application of (ICT) in an educational context allows learning to generate greater motivation and satisfaction of the student, and the aspects that will improve their training. The fact that the technologies do not stop evolving, as well as the fact that the teaching has to be adapted, allows us to be always in continuous movement in the investigation in this field.
Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?
In my research group, the main areas are focused on the evaluation within the educational contexts of the improvements that contribute to technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), gamification, robotics, mobile learning, and more. These technologies generate new uses, making it necessary to evaluate for each type of user, their adequacy, aspects that generate many educational data that we analyze through approaches of learning and academic analytics.
As long as we are able to implement, evaluate, and improve the use of these technologies in an educational way, the impact will be transferred to society effectively, by improving the way we communicate, work, learn, or enjoy our leisure time.
In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of your research to its community of users?
These benefits include; the increase of the student’s motivation in the subjects of study, increase of the knowledge in the use of all type of technologies, better preparation for the labor market, reduction of the digital divide, and more.
What are the future directions of your research areas?
We are currently working on three fundamental areas, which consist of:
First, we are investigating the possibilities of the new interactive visual systems (AR/VR), in the teaching of complex subjects, especially those who need a strong understanding of the 3D space.
Secondly, we are assessing the impact of robotics and collaborative environments, type FabLab, in pre-university education, in order to motivate new scientific and technological vocations.
Finally, we are analyzing the results obtained from these processes, in order to improve the user experience, the usability and the methods in how the data will be treated in the future using systems, like type Blockchain.
What are some other evolving research trends you have observed in your industry/field over the past several months and what would you say are some of the innovative research directions you foresee in the future? How do you feel your publication sets the pace for these innovations?
In these three areas (mentioned above) are undoubtedly fundamental aspects, and of maximum topicality in multiple environments. The ability to have a team trained and expert in these fields, allows us to be positioned to provide support at the level of technology transfer, as well as provide applied research in these environments.
We would like to thank
