IGI Global Speaks With Dr. David Taniar On Maintaining The Coveted Impact Factor In support of the acclaimed researchers and faculty members associated with IGI Global publications, IGI Global has implemented the Outstanding Scholars Program. We are pleased to continue this series by recognizing Dr. David Taniar of Monash University Australia. Dr. Taniar is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Data Warehousing and Mining, and has made hundreds of article and book contributions in the area of web technologies. Here he speaks with us about maintaining a Thomson Reuters Impact Factor for his journal, as well as his experiences in academic publishing.

Tell us about yourself. How did you become involved with the International Journal of Data Warehousing and Mining?

In 2004, I was approached by IGI Global to start a new journal in data warehousing and data mining. As a researcher working in those areas, I was aware that there was a limited number of venues where data warehousing researchers, particularly, could publish their work. So, I accepted the invitation, and the journal was launched in 2005.

How long have you worked with IGI Global? Why do you choose IGI Global as your publisher?

I started working with IGI Global over 10 years ago. I co-edited the book Web-Powered Databases in 2003. I also published the title Object-Oriented Oracle a few years after that. IGI Global is well-known publisher which publishes cutting-edge trends in IT, and that’s why I chose IGI to publish my first edited book in 2003.

Your journal continues to receive an increased Impact Factor every year. How do you make that happen?

I ensure that papers published in IJDWM are of not only high quality, but also relevant to researchers in data processing, data warehousing, and data mining areas. One of the criteria for an acceptance for publication in IJDWM is that the paper has potential to attract a wide readership, and consequently citations.

What do you require from your journal contributors to maintain and build your journal’s reputation?

High quality publishing support is the primary key; this includes professional typesetting of the papers, as well as a wider range of word processing systems (e.g. LaTeX) should be allowed to be used by authors who are going to submit their papers to IJDWM.

How can other researchers maximize the exposure and increase the likelihood of indexing for their publications? What resources are required?

Authors of submitted papers should use a title for their papers that would likely to attract people to read the papers. The titles should also have the ability to be captured by the searching from other researchers. This does not necessarily mean that the titles should be broad; It can be technically specific as well.

Do you execute any personal promotions to support the journal? What specifically?

Yes, by maintaining a strong network, particularly in the data warehousing community.
Dr. David Taniar holds Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees - all in Computer Science, with a particular specialty in Databases. His current research is applying data management techniques to various domains, including mobile and spatial information systems, parallel computing, big data, and data integration. Every year he publishes extensively, including his recent co-authored book: High Performance Parallel Database Processing and Grid Databases (John Wiley & Sons, 2008).
