KM Courses Keep Business Students Moving Toward the Future

By IGI Global on Jul 8, 2011
Is knowledge management the next big push for tomorrow's business world? Companies are always looking for ways to streamline their business practices and make them as efficient as possible, and knowledge management tools provide many such opportunities.

"It's easy enough to slap up a project management tool and start collaborating on the enterprise level, but if you need to make sure that different people in your organization have access to the knowledge that keeps your organization rolling along, arranging for some sort of sharing mechanism can be difficult," Thursday Bram said in a recent article in GigaOM. "The process of doing so, of sharing information across multiple members of your organization, is known as knowledge management."

Bram went on in the article to note the complexity and importance of choosing the right knowledge management tool for any organization based on several factors including ease of use, specialized knowledge, and technical management.

Knowledge management is a growing field that combines and integrates many aspects of business administration, information systems, management, computer science, media, human resources, and more. Although it is a newer field, it is increasingly being seen as an indispensable part of any medium-sized or large organization. For this reason, many universities are putting more emphasis on knowledge management programs and incorporating additional knowledge management courses into existing programs, such as business or information technology.

IGI Global is proud to offer a variety of quality knowledge management references that are well-suited for an upper-level undergraduate or graduate course with a focus in this area. One book that has recently been reviewed and adopted for use in the classroom is Strategic Knowledge Management in Multinational Organizations, edited by Kevin O'Sullivan, New York Institute of Technology, USA.

Strategic Knowledge Management in Multinational OrganizationsThis reference presents a comprehensive set of investigations of a wide range of environmental factors, both internal and external, that contribute to the key challenge of complexity in knowledge management. These factors include culture, technology, communications, infrastructure, and learning and leadership structures. With its inclusive coverage of the salient issues, this reference publication provides libraries with a single source for the defining research on knowledge management in multinational contexts.
