E-Collaboration, A Necessity for Modern Communication

By IGI Global on Dec 21, 2012
E-Collaboration, A Necessity for Modern CommunicationE-Collaboration systems have become the backbone infrastructure to support virtual work in and across organizations. Fuelled by recent technology trends, the market today offers an abundance of systems that support a wide range of communication and collaboration features. Such features and investigations are necessary in dealing with distance communications and interactions in everyday life. It is also important to take into account that e-Communications reduce the use of innate human senses, creating a margin for miscommunication and error which must be taken into account when dealing with e-Collaboration.

An article from the Wall Street Journal states: “We live in a culture where young people—outfitted with iPhones and laptops and devoting hours every evening from age 10 onward to messaging of one kind and another—are ever less likely to develop the “silent fluency” that comes from face-to-face interaction. It is a skill that we all must learn, in actual social settings, from people (often older) who are adept in the idiom. As text-centered messaging increases, such occasions diminish. The digital natives improve their adroitness at the keyboard, but when it comes to their capacity to “read” the behavior of others, they are all thumbs.”

E-Collaboration is an often overlooked area of study which will require further representation as technology progresses. IGI Global is currently offering complimentary e-access to the article, “E-Research Collaboration in Academia and Industry.” Written by Bay Arinze of Drexel University, this article will prove helpful for researchers who deal with E-Collaboration systems as their objects of interest, as well as for business executives, who need to gather information to support buying decisions. Edited by Professor Ned Kock of Texas A&M University, the International Journal of e-Collaboration (IJeC) addresses the design and implementation of e-collaboration technologies, assesses its behavioral impact on individuals and groups, and presents theoretical considerations on links between the use of e-collaboration technologies and behavioral patterns. An innovative collection of the latest research findings, this journal covers significant topics such as Web-based chat tools, Web-based asynchronous conferencing tools, e-mail, listservs, collaborative writing tools, group decision support systems, teleconferencing suites, workflow automation systems, and document management technologies.

Professor Kock was recently awarded the 2012 InfoSci®-Journals Distinguished Fellowship by IGI Global, an initiative to acknowledge outstanding contributions and commitment of journal editors.
