Green and Ecological Technologies for Urban Planning: Creating Smart Cities With new developments and innovations in environmental technologies, Europe seeks to devise a plan to create a sustainable urban environment. Europe’s largest international port located in Rotterdam is known for its constant ship traffic passing through the area each day. It is not, however, known for its eco-friendly environment.

According to a recent CNN news report, Rotterdam emits 29.8 tons of carbon per capita, which is one of the highest areas for carbon emission in the world. After further investigation into current environmental issues, Europe plans to make Rotterdam the most sustainable port in the world.

While rebuilding the port, environmentalists will take several ideas into consideration, including solar powered heating and air conditioning, special plastic material windows, and a special construction to avoid excess water from clogging the sewage system. To compensate for rising sea levels, floating urban districts are projected to be built on the water's surface by the year 2040. Similar environmental technologies used for the building of sustainable urban environments can be found in the IGI Global chapter, "Technologies in Urban Design Practice: Integrating Environmental Design Considerations."

Written by research professionals Yan Zhu and Tim Health of the University of Nottingham, UK, this chapter presents the idea of creating more sustainable urban environments. In order to start this process, crucial environmental factors are presented for government officials to take into consideration:

“In recent decades, issues such as global warming and the rapid depletion of fossil fuels have made sustainability a significant and critical issue for architecture and urban design. As such, researchers and practitioners have focused upon the investigation and analysis of environmental design in architectural design practice.”

This chapter is featured in the IGI Global book, Green and Ecological Technologies for Urban Planning: Creating Smart Cities, by Ozge Yalciner Ercoskun of Gazi University, Turkey, which addresses the ecological, technological, and social challenges faced in the smart urban planning and design of settlements when using eco-technologies – from sustainable land use to transportation, and from green areas to municipal applications – with a focus on resilience.
