Advancements in the development of the carbon nanotube have made them a recently trending topic in the fields of chemistry and science, creating buzz and speculation on the vast possibilities for these carbon molecules.

How Carbon Nanotubes Will Change The World These microscopic structures- a nanotube's diameter is about 10,000 times smaller than a human hair- have had a dramatic impact on science and technology. With their extraordinary strength and fascinating conduction properties for electricity and heat, nanotubes are finding applications in everything from cancer treatments to hydrogen cars. Discover Magazine discusses numerous possibilities being explored utilizing the carbon nanotube or CNT; possibilities that could lead to world-changing research developments and discoveries, such as the creation of x-rays that can take sharper, faster pictures of organs perpetually in motion, like the heart and lungs. Other potential developments stemming from the carbon nanotube include the hydrogen car, powered by bundles of CNTs, and infection and disease diagnosis by using a CNT biosensor which can take place of time-intensive cell swabbing and lab analysis. The Discover article goes on to discuss the invention of paper-thin speakers, Spider-man-like adhesive surfaces that can defy gravity, bendable electronics, and 30-second laser treatments that evaporated tumors in lab mice, all a result of the carbon nanotube.

According to Michigan State’s Nanotube Site, carbon nanotubes consist of graphitic layers of carbon allotropes seamlessly wrapped to cylinders. A few nanometers in diameter, yet up to a millimeter long, the length-to-width aspect ratio is extremely high. The outcome is unprecedented for macroscopic devices of this size.

The IGI Global article “A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study of the Mechanical Properties of Carbon-Nanotube Reinforced Polystyrene Composite,” from the International Journal of Manufacturing, Materials, and Mechanical Engineering (IJMMME) further explores the recent developments of the carbon nanotube.

Written by Nabila Tahreen and K. M. Masud, both of the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, this analysis explores molecular dynamics (MD) as a simulation method to investigate the mechanical properties of the PS/CNT (polystyrene/carbon nanotube) composite system. From the third volume of the International Journal of Manufacturing, Materials, and Mechanical Engineering (IJMMME), this refereed, interdisciplinary journal publishes high quality articles with special emphasis on research and development in manufacturing, materials and mechanical engineering. IJMMME provides discussion and the exchange of information on all important aspects of classical and modern mechanical engineering. In addition IJMMME covers all sustainable development aspects related with, manufacturing, materials and mechanical engineering.
