Big Data presents key challenges and opportunities in the business world. Advanced big data technologies enable organizations to extract insights from sophisticated data, but implementing and using big data can be an extremely daunting task.

Traditional relational database systems are unable to handle the large volumes of datasets, diverse data sources and the velocity of data, and the initial implementation and adaptation of such a huge system is hard to grasp. Volume, variety, and velocity represent the main challenges of big data; challenges which cause difficulties in capture, storage, search, sharing, analysis and visualization of information.

How can businesses today confront these challenges and take advantage of all that big data has to offer? With the advent of big data there are now specialized technologies to assist businesses with the transition to big data. NoSQL, Hadoop, Cloud computing and visualization are key in assisting organizations in solving their big data challenges. The NoSQL database stores and manages unstructured data, distributing the work across multiple locations. Apache Hadoop manages a broad range of data types in its distributed file system, plus process analytic queries via MapReduce across data types. Clouds also add many tools to handle the volume, variety, and velocity of big data. Data visualization tools allow organizations to access huge amounts of data to provide meaningful information in an efficient way. These technologies have positively affected the organizations, turning their big data problems into opportunity.

Dr. Hoda Ahmed Abdelhafez is author of the chapter, "Big Data Analytics: Trends and Case Studies," which analyzes the challenges of big data: volume, variety, and velocity. This article further discusses the technologies addressed above and strategies that businesses can utilize in confronting the challenges of big data. The article discusses five real-world case studies exemplifying how big data technologies can allow companies to gain useful insights and maximize their revenues.

"Big Data Analytics: Trends and Case Studies" has been selected as a featured open access chapter for the next thirty days. View the full chapter here.
