Handbook of Research on Mass Shootings and Multiple Victim Violence

2019: Year of the Most Mass Killings Since 1970s

By Brittany Haynes on Jan 13, 2020
As escalating violence, acts of terrorism, and mass killings in public continues to become a topic of importance internationally and as gun control persists as a hot button issue of debate, a database compiled by The Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University noted 2019 had the highest amount of mass killings than any other year at least as far back as the 1970s in the United States. In many of these cases, the motivation, or what set off the shooter or perpetrator, continues to be unknown.

In total, there were reportedly 41 mass killings (where four or more people were killed, not including the assailant), and 33 of these killings were categorized as mass shootings with more than 210 people killed. These numbers are staggering and leave many researchers, police officers, prevention experts, and other professionals looking for more information about multiple victim violence and mass shootings.

IGI Global publishes the most innovative content on mass shootings, multiple victim violence, and crime prevention in the Handbook of Research on Mass Shootings and Multiple Victim Violence, edited by Dr. Gordon A. Crews from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, USA, which outlines the history of mass violence, the evolution of K-12 school and higher education shootings, the motivation of the assailant(s), and prevention methods. This essential publication is featured in IGI Global’s InfoSci®-Books database (5,300+ e-books). Recommend IGI Global’s InfoSci-Books database to your library to have access to this critical research, along with the featured chapters below, which are available in the aforementioned Handbook of Research, and receive 100% OA APC waivers when your work is submitted and accepted into an IGI Global journal and/or book.
