Reviews & Statements

Scholars of library science, information science, and other disciplines explain that, with the Internet and other electronic media, researchers must publicize their finding rather than just get them published to advance in their field. Among their topics are constructing a proper research report, the changing face of scholarly communication and its impact on library and information centers, local linguists mastering academic writing in English: seeking explanations in sociocultural contexts, measuring the research impact of scholarly publications using altmetrics: a case study of Thapar University in India, and search engines and meta-search engines for effective information retrieval and scholarly communication.

– Protoview Reviews

This volume in the Advances in Knowledge Acquisition, Transfer and Management (AKATM) book series address a core concern for academics: the publishing and sharing of their work. More than ever, scholars are finding new ways to publish and share, pointing to a demand for efficiency and also raising ethical questions. Fourteen chapters expound on a host of topics which help paint a clearer portrait of where academic publishing is heading.
Like other titles in the series, each chapter begins with an abstract that summarizes the impetus for the research to follow. Chapters may also include background information and summary conclusions. Many of the book’s topics address the rapidly changing landscape of online publishing and the new digital tools that help manage it. Specifically, chapters discuss the importance of citations and development of new citation tools, the prevalence of open access resources, the use of Altmetrics to incorporate internet mentions into the value of scholarly work, research design, and much more. Information is presented in generally concise paragraphs enhanced by the occasional use of bullet points, paragraph headings and subheadings, key terms and definitions, data tables and more.
The preface establishes the volume’s organization as well as its highly specialized mission. References are listed at the end of each chapter and compiled again at the end of the book, alongside brief contributor biographies and an index. The book would make an important reference for educators and scholars of many fields throughout academia.
