Description & Coverage
Description:

Civil and environmental engineers work together to develop, build, and maintain the man-made and natural environments that make up the infrastructures and ecosystems in which we live and thrive.

Civil and Environmental Engineering: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications is a comprehensive multi-volume publication showcasing the best research on topics pertaining to road design, building maintenance and construction, transportation, earthquake engineering, waste and pollution management, and water resources management and engineering. Through its broad and extensive coverage on a variety of crucial concepts in the field of civil engineering, and its subfield of environmental engineering, this multi-volume work is an essential addition to the library collections of academic and government institutions and appropriately meets the research needs of engineers, environmental specialists, researchers, and graduate-level students.

Coverage:

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Coastal Engineering
  • Construction Engineering
  • Environmental Fluid Mechanics
  • Geotechnology
  • Hydrology
  • Infrastructure Systems
  • Structural Engineering
  • Structural Mechanics
  • Transportation Systems
Reviews & Statements

The work’s broad scope is organized into five sections. Section one provides a background on public works projects. This section serves as an overview of current civil engineering practices. Section two explores some novel methodologies and applications in primarily public works projects. It also addresses other nonengineering factors (such as human behavior) that are currently integrated in project design and layout. Section three is primarily a collection of case studies showcasing the marriage of contemporary engineering practice and novel approaches in public works projects. Section five critically analyzes our approach to civil engineering issues. While some chapters suggest other approaches, the focus is on outlining the issues, and asking relevant questions. Section six looks at the possible trajectories civil engineering could take. Some of the issues are universal (such as sustainability and efficiency), others are more unique to developments in the twenty-first century (such as real-time data acquisition and decision-making, and mobile communication).

The broader and more social-political essays can be appreciated by nontechnical readers. Each essay has an extensive list of references, making this work an excellent starting point for those interested in contemporary civil engineering. Recommended for not only civil engineers, but also for managers of civil engineering projects.
