Why Are Emerging Computing Techniques Essential to Computer Science Research? Hear From Dr. Sam Goundar
By
Anne Long
on
Aug 30, 2019
With technology and data constantly evolving in an ever-changing industry, cloud computing architecture is becoming unsuitable for the Internet of Things as more and more data becomes available for use among computer science and information technology (IT) professionals through wired and wireless devices. As such, fog computing is becoming an emerging research area that expands mobile cloud computing services to satisfy customer’s requirements between the devices and cloud and handle larger amounts of data. To give us insight into this powerful and dynamic area of study, IGI Global interviewed industry expert and editor of the
International Journal of Fog Computing
(IJFC)
, Dr. Sam Goundar, from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, to find out how computing technologies are changing and shaping the computer science industry, and how professionals are approaching these areas of research.
What inspired you to pursue research activities in your field?
I have been an academic for over 30 years teaching information technology, information systems, and computer science courses at different universities in several countries. My field of teaching involves technologies and infrastructure that are constantly changing, evolving, and becoming obsolete. Research helps me better understand new technologies while giving me a hands-on approach to the use and management of it. This informs my teaching and my course content. As new technologies like cloud computing, mobile cloud computing, fog computing, blockchains, and cryptocurrencies emerge, it is necessary to research them and impart such knowledge to my graduates so that they are able to utilize the new skills in the IT industry.
Why are your respective areas of research important to the field at large?
Cloud computing is now a topic of substantial impact, and it is forcing both academia and industries to think, act, and adopt its services. Cloud computing enables mobile phones to be used as a connection device to access the computing power of desktop computers and access services, applications, web, databases, and information from the Internet.
Fog computing works in conjunction with cloud computing, optimizing the use of the resources. Currently, most enterprise data are pushed up to the cloud, stored, and analyzed, after which a decision is made, and action is taken. But this isn’t efficient. Fog computing allows computing, decision-making, and action-taking to happen via Internet of Things (IoT) devices and only pushes relevant data to the cloud. Companies have begun to look for solutions that would help reduce their IT costs and improve profitability; fog computing is becoming a foundation for benefits well beyond IT cost savings.
A blockchain is a database or an online ledger that is publicly shared and exists on several computers and can be accessed by anyone with an Internet connection. Blockchain’s distributed ledger system was initially developed for bitcoins. Cryptocurrencies like bitcoins are a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that allows users to pay each other and overcomes the digital double spend problem.
In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of your research to its community of users?
The primary objective of my research is to inform other researchers, practitioners, and students about the evolving theory and practice related to fog computing, while providing comprehensive coverage and understanding of its technological, business, and organizational dimensions.
The secondary objective of my research is to provide a thorough examination of fog Computing with respect to issues of management, governance, trust and privacy, and interoperability. I also intend to address the concerns of many business leaders in regard to fog computing security, adaptability, availability, scalability, and data protection.
My research on blockchains and cryptocurrencies provides a forum for scholars, researchers, and practitioners to disseminate knowledge, methodologies, theoretical analyses, modelling, simulations, and empirical studies on blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies. Publications on the evolving theory and practice related to distributed ledger technologies and peer-to-peer digital currencies are intended to provide comprehensive coverage and understanding of its use within the technological, business, and organizational dimensions.
What are the future directions of your research areas?
Fog computing is still evolving, and the technologies are getting fine-tuned as its use and management continues. As the user’s requests are processed at the edge of the network rather than the central remote server, users need to be educated on the privacy and security issues of using and connecting their devices to public networks and WIFIs. Fog computing also enables sensors, gadgets, appliances, and almost anything to connect (Internet of Things) to a network server or database. The data gathered from these devices are sensitive and need to remain confidential.
Data security, privacy, storage, and access are critical areas of future research. The future of fog computing depends on its reliability, scalability, sustainability, resources, and services provisioning. New fog computing applications and architectures should be interoperable with existing cloud computing infrastructures and legacy networks. Future research should focus on tools and utilities to make fog computing more user-friendly for everyone.
What has your experience publishing with IGI Global been like?
IGI Global’s
eEditorial Discovery® system
makes reviewing, editing, and publishing a pleasant experience. I have used the system as an author, peer reviewer, editorial review board member, and as an Editor-in-Chief. The ease of use, user-friendly interfaces, prompts, confirmations, error corrections, undo features, and step-by-step procedures make the e-Editorial Discovery system one of the best publishing systems out there.
As an author, I was informed of my manuscript’s publication decision within a few weeks. As a reviewer, I am able to upload my comments and provide my evaluation of the manuscript by using Likert scale ratings, openly typing comments, and even using track changes to work directly on the author’s manuscript. As an Editor-in-Chief, I get email notifications when a manuscript is submitted to my journal, when I assign reviewers, when reviewers finish their reviews, when receiving requested revisions from authors, and when making publication decisions.
IGI Global would like to thank Dr. Goundar for sharing his insight on cloud computing, fog computing, and the future of computer science research. Additionally, Dr. Goundar's journal, IJFC, is continuously seeking new, innovative content for publication. For individuals interested in submitting a paper to IJFC, you can submit your article

Despite increasing acceptance and legalization of cannabis in some US states, disparities persist in federal marijuana laws, exacerbated by the Biden administration's classification of cannabis as a Schedule I drug.
